"Under Jane's tutelage, I made the transition from 20 years of riding hunters to dressage with great enthusiasm. Eventually, I decided I needed to find a horse who would help me succeed in the upper levels of dressage. Jane was an excellent matchmaker and while in Germany found me a beautiful young horse named Rosenstolz (Maury). There are no words to describe Jane's talent and patience with riders and horses. She has an amazing eye for detail. Thanks to her, I was RAAC Novice Reserve Champion at Training Level, RAAC Elite Champion at First Level, and scored in the CDS Top 10 at finals. I look forward to many years of riding Maury with Jane."
"In 2002 I was an adequate second level rider, in 2007 I won the USDF Adult Amateur Champion at Grand Prix. This remarkable accomplishment was due entirely to Jane. From recommending the horse that I purchased to her careful coaching and training of me, she transformed everything about my riding and brought out the best. Jane is a yenta (matchmaker), for horse and rider. She found Marlow while looking for horses for her other students. He was an extremely talented 13 year old Swedish gelding performing at PSG with a penchant for unloading riders lacking hutzpa (self-confidence). Jane, having worked with me for the past 3 years, knew me and knew that I am both determined and capable of staying on. It was love at first bite.
In the first year in our lessons she would often warm the horse up for me, getting him through and straight. I would then get on to feel what she had, ride a bit, then get stuck and she’d get back on. Sometimes we would swap riding four or even five times in a lesson until I got the feel. Jane never lost patience, nor did she ever lose hope that I’d figure it out. I remember the day when I learned what ‘in front of the leg’ really was. It was quite the epiphany. Jane was even more delighted than I was!
In 2003 we were third at PSG and 6th at I-1 for the USDF Adult Amateur. We also won first place all breeds for Swedish horses. It was that year that Jane decided Marlow had the ability to go all the way to Grand Prix. I sustained an injury on another horse and after the finals and could not ride for a while. We decided Jane would ride Marlow for a few months. During this time Jane taught Marlow 1’s, and polished the piaffe/passage and transitions while I cheered and watched from the sidelines. What is remarkable about this is that Jane taught Marlow the basic Grand Prix movements in two months. Even more remarkable, for the next 3 years she did not train the horse, she trained me to train the horse. In 2005 I received my USDF Gold Medal and then two years later, the penultimate adult amateur award, the USDF Grand Prix..
Jane has a number of qualities that I have not found in any other trainer:
• I have watched her develop three horses to Grand Prix for other riders, not to mention the three before that. Nobody in Northern California can claim this.
• She has an amazing ability to describe what you are looking for feel-wise as well as what the exercise should achieve. This ability translates directly to rider success, she has coached three riders to Grand Prix and a fourth is on her way.
• She is an extraordinarily kind and honest horse person. She will give you the shirt off your back and she is always honest about the costs, there are never any hidden or extraneous commissions or charges
• Jane is breed agnostic, she is as happy teaching a quarter horse as a Hannoverian
Your dreams can come true if you ride with Jane!"
I am so excited to have Dawn and Tommy as my students. Tommy is a lovely quarter horse who had kissing spine surgery and was uncomfortable under saddle post-surgery. With Dawn's good riding and some dressage-type training, Tommy is starting to work happy again. I am so delighted that teaching Dawn and her horse how to integrate basic dressage skills into their western workouts has been a positive experience for them both.
Janice is my childhood friend, and although she is back in Oregon now, I am extremely proud of the small part I played on her journey to earn her USDF Gold medal. Janice competed in our barn through 4th level, and achieved success at the finals on Marian Berg's Daisy. Now she is riding her wonderful Grand Prix horse "Harry."
I watched Janice transition from a beautiful rider to a beautiful and extremely effective rider! That is what makes it possible for someone to reach Olympic Level in this sport. Janice, you did it!
We loved Susan so much. We cannot bear to take her off the site. RIP dear Susan.
"Three years ago, I was looking for a young horse to train up through the levels because my young one had multiple health issues. I bought my young mare, Rhodara, from one of Jane's students (Melissa Rogers). Melissa is a wonderful rider, so I asked her who she trained with, and she told me Jane Ewer. I had been looking for an upper-level trainer; someone who I could learn from and who respected the horse. I had a clear idea of what I was looking for. I had made it to 4th level successfully, and needed help getting beyond that. I tried a lesson with Jane, and I never looked back. I feel so lucky to have found a trainer who does not belittle me, and does not make me feel like an idiot when I don't get it. She really knows her stuff. In addition, I feel comfortable having her get on my precious FEI horse, and he always feels better when I get back on. Jane has multiple ways of explaining and troubleshooting, and knows when the horse needs a break. She is definitely the right person for me."
Jane takes great pleasure in watching her students progress in their dressage endeavors. She feels extremely lucky to have worked with a large number of talented amateurs and professionals in recent years. As much as Jane loves to help people prepare for shows, for some riders it is not about showing, but about the process of learning dressage. Because of this Jane considers herself a trainer who is truly suited to teach all dressage enthusiasts, regardless of their goals.
